LEED Compliant
Yellow Triangle
What is LEED?

LEED is a certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. The acronym stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, as the program assists building owners and operators to create and/or adopt environmentally responsible and resource-efficient activities.

LEED is a rating system for buildings, equivalent to a gas mileage rating for cars. Under LEED, buildings accumulate points for things such as saving energy, having accessible mass transit, and mitigating storm water runoff. Once the points are tallied, the building earns a LEED rating. The higher the tally, the more sustainable a building is.

Sodium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride and magnesium chloride are commonly used in de-icers.  For the most part all de-icers work by melting the snow and ice and forming brine. This brine breaks the bond between the pavement and the ice due to the brine’s lower freezing point. Most commonly used is sodium chloride (rock salt). Rock salt has been used for decades, it's inexpensive & it works to a certain temperature. There are multiple environmental issues with the overapplication of salt and these other chlorides...corrosion to concrete, metals, groundwater contamination, vegetation and grass burn.

The Benefits of LEED Compliance:
Reduced energy and water usage
Reduced construction waste during the building process
Increased indoor air quality
Increased employee satisfaction, and retention
Reduced maintenance and operation costs
Reduced liability
Promotes usage of recycled material
Attracts companies & individuals who value sustainability

Salt Depot's Viper Melt is a 20% CMA blend.  It also contains chlorides which are necessary to achieve a melting temperature of -13F. Straight CMA only provides a melting temperature of 10F. With 20% CMA, Viper Melt will be 70-80% LESS corrosive than any other chloride ice melt.

Viper Melt has Leed Compliant characteristics if applied 70-80% of the time & tracked appropriately.  Viper 2.0 is completely LEED Compliant and should be used the other 20-25%.
